About Festival
The International Folk Festival “The Wreath of Vršac” was founded in 1993, with the intention, like many famous world festivals, to preserve and cherish the things which are the most valuable in the rich fund of folk songs and dances. In its essence, this folk review, has the intention to present the best achievements of the international folk scene to the expert critics, as well as to the wide audience.
From the very beginning, the International Folk Festival “The Wreath of Vršac” has been following the defined progrmme conception, which includes three development lines: competitive programme, review programme and accompanying manifestations.
The artistic stilization of the stage folklore, as a kind of addition to the original folk structure, whicn is performed on the Festival stage by a number of amateur ensembles, is verified and marked by giving awards and is the special chalenge for all those, who through music and dance cherish traditional values of their people.
During the Festival, the review and accompanying programme offer a number of interesting events, such as concerts, exhibitions, lectures from the field of ethnology, ethno fair, learning of traditional Serbian dances.
Almost 200 ensembles from the whole world participated in the past 11 Festivals: Spain, France, Slovakia, Czeck Republic, Poland, Georgia, Romania, Macedonia, India, Mexico, Republic of Srpska, Montenegro, Canada, Moldavia, Ukraine, Russia, Hungary, Slovenia, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Ivory Coast, Afro Columbia, Croatia, Sri Lanka, Bulgaria…, and the scientific meetings about the Festival have brought together more than 50 most eminent ethnologists, ethnomusicologists and choreographers from our country and from abroad, such as: dr Milina Barišić, dr Petar Vlahović, dr Nikola Pantelić, Nice Fracile, Emilia Komišel, Stoiu Đouđev, Lajoš Vargas, Vilma Niškanović, Vesna Marijanović, Dragana Jovanović, Desanka Đorđević, Bogdanka Đurić and many others.
Festivals of this kind are very convenient celebrations, which enable companionship, friendship and the wide range of knowledge exchange. They transmit precious messages about the value of each individual, in the racial, as well as in the linguistic, ethnic, confessional and any other sense. The International Folk Festival “The Wreath of Vršac” will present that for the twelfth time, at the six-day-long celebration of song and dance, in Vršac, from 30 June to 6 July 2009.
